Dear Mr. Jones -- No, I was not aware of the upcoming birthday, but I am most grateful to you for your message. What would I like to express to this wonderful actress?? So much that I could not fit it into an e mail of any length. But I would be very much in your debt if you could communicate this to her: in terms of today's film and theater, I am in despair. In fact, my poor wife has to drag me kicking and screaming from many a performance. In light of this, I want Ms Mitchell to know that there are two filmed performances that I really believe should be required viewing in every drama school in the US, the UK and the Republic of Ireland. The first is a l948 film entitled "Portrait of Jennie " that features a short scene with Ethel Barrymore; she plays the manager of an art gallery and every minute of that scene is a treasure. The second is that scene in "The Pilot's Wife" when Ms Mitchell meets the pilot's wife. I have replayed that film many times, if only for that scene; her acting is only breathtaking, the summit of what an actor can do. If you want to edit my remarks, I am in your hands! I have one final little note to add: my father's mother was Helen Mitchell. The family was in County Galway, Ireland. If I was even most distantly related to this wonderful woman, I think I could die happy. Again, I am in your hands on this. Please keep me on your list--I was so very grateful to hear from you! I hope that some of my message gets through to Ms Mitchell. Tell her I would love to serve her breakfast in bed!
